Something Sappy

We wish for you…

On your wedding day,
we wish for you…
Comfort on difficult days,
Smiles when sadness intrudes,
Rainbows to follow the clouds,
And laughter to kiss your lips.
Sunsets to warm your heart,
Gentle hugs when spirits sag,
Friendships to brighten your being,
And beauty for your eyes to see.
Confidence for when you doubt,
Faith so that you can believe,
Courage to know yourself,
Patience to accept the truth,
And love to complete your life.

Anon. adapted by Lisa Greenfield

I do not love you…

I do not love you
as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations
the fire shoots off.

I love you as certain dark things
are to be loved, in secret,
between the shadow
and the soul.

I love you as the plant
that never blooms
but carries in itself
the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love
a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth,
lives darkly in my body.

I love you without
knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly,
without complexities or pride;
so I love you because
I know no other way than this:
where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your
hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your
eyes close as I fall asleep.

Pablo Neruda

If you came to me
with a face I have not seen,
with a voice I have never heard,
I would still know you.

Even if centuries separated us,
I would still feel you.

Somewhere between the sand
and the stardust,
through every collapse
and creation,
there is a pulse
that echoes of you and I.

When we leave this world,
we give up all our possessions and our memories.
Love is the only thing we take with us.
It is all we carry from one life to the next.

Lang Leav

The Sun and the Moon

Aim for a love
that reminds you
of the devotion
the sun has to the moon.

Whether she is in fractions
or she is whole,
he still shrouds his intense light
in the darkness of the night.

To give her the entire sky,
without judgment,
so she can shine
in any way she wants to.

You deserve someone
who adores you on the days
you are in broken fragments too.

You deserve someone
who lets you glow
in every way you need to.

Nikita Gill

Whenever I am
away from you,
The distance between us
a burdensome thing.

I always think of you in colours.
The smell of coffee
as you so proudly make it for me.

The perfect sunlight
spilling in through the window.

I miss you
even when you are beside me.
I dream of your body
even when you are sleeping in my arms.

The words I love you
could never be enough.
I suppose we’ll have to invent new ones

Christopher Poindexter

Once in a Lifetime

Once in a lifetime
You find someone
Who touches not only your heart
But also your soul

You discover someone
Who stands beside you,
but not over you

You find someone
Who loves you for who you are
And not for who you could be.

Once in a lifetime
If you are lucky
You find someone
As you have found each other.

Nanci Brillant

Love is Giving

Love is giving, not taking,

Mending, not breaking,
Trusting, believing,
Never deceiving,
Patiently bearing
And faithfully sharing
Each joy, every sorrow,
Today and tomorrow.
Love is kind, understanding,

Love is giving, not taking,
But never demanding.
Love is constant, prevailing,
Its strength never failing.
A promise once spoken
For all time unbroken,
Love’s time is for ever.

Puts the music in laughter,
The beauty in song,
The warmth in a shoulder,
The gentle in strong.

Puts the magic in memories,
The sunshine in skies,
The gladness in giving,
The starlight in eyes,

Puts the fun in together,
The sad in apart,
The hope in tomorrow,
The joy in the heart.

What is Marriage?

Marriage is the union
of two people in love,
And love is sheer magic,
for it’s woven of
Gossamer dreams,
enchantingly real,
That people in love
are privileged to feel –

But the ‘exquisite ecstasy’
that captures the heart
Of two people in love
is just a small part
Of the beauty and wonder
and Miracle of
The growth and fulfilment
and evolvement of love –

For only long years
of living together
And sharing and caring
in all kinds of weather
Both pleasure and pain,
the glad and the sad,
Teardrops and laughter,
the good and the bad,
Can add new dimensions
and lift love above
The rapturous ecstasies
of ‘falling in love’ –

For ecstasy passes
but it is replaced
By something much greater
that cannot be defaced,
For what was ‘in part’
has now ‘become whole’ –
For on the ‘wings of the flesh,
” love entered the ‘soul’!

Helen Steiner Rice

Gravitation cannot
be held responsible
for people falling in love.

How on earth can you explain
in terms of chemistry and physics,
so important a biological phenomenon
as first love?

Put your hand on a stove for a minute
and it seems like an hour.
Sit with that special person for an hour
and it seems like a minute.

That’s relativity.

Albert Einstein

The One

When the one
whose hand you’re holding,
Is the one
who holds your heart,
When the one
whose eyes you gaze into,
Gives your hopes and dreams their start,

When the one
you think of first and last,
Is the one
who holds you tight
And the things you plan together,
Make the whole world seem just right,

When the one
whom you believe in,
Puts their faith and trust in you,
You’ve found the
one and only love,
You’ll share your whole life through

Cheryl Barclay

It is often said that it is love that makes the world go round.
However, without doubt, it is friendship that keeps our spinning existence on an even keel.

True friendship provides
so many of the essentials for a happy life –
it is the strong foundation on which to build an enduring relationship,
it is the mortar which bonds us together in harmony,
and it is the calm, warm protection we sometimes need
when the world outside seems cold and chaotic.

True friendship holds a mirror to our foibles and failings,
without destroying our sense of worthiness.
True friendship nurtures our hopes,
supports us in our disappointments,
and encourages us to grow to our best potential.

The Art of Marriage

A good marriage must be created.
In marriage the little things become the big things.

It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say “I Love You” at least once a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers the whole family.
It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other room to grow.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is not only marrying the right person.
It is being the right partner.

Guidelines for a Happy Marriage

  1. Never be angry at the same time
    – take it in turns.
  2. Never yell at each other
    – unless the house is on fire.
  3. If one of you has to win an argument
    – let it be the other.
  4. If you have to criticise
    – do it lovingly – and with tact
  5. Never bring up mistakes from the past
    – otherwise you’ll be there all night.
  6. Neglect the whole world
    – rather than one another.
  7. Never go to sleep with an argument unsettled
    – unless (partner name) has been on the grog.
  8. At least once every day
    – try to say one kind word to each other.
  9. When you have done something wrong
    – be ready to admit it and when you are right – just shut up.
  10. If you wish happiness and harmony to reign in your household,
remember the date of your wedding anniversary.

The Keys to Love

The key to love is understanding…
the ability to comprehend not only the spoken word,
but those unspoken gestures,
the little things that say so much by themselves.

The key to love is forgiveness…
to accept each other’s faults and pardon mistakes,
without forgetting ~
but with remembering what you learn from them…

The key to love is trust….
though dark doubts lay in hollowed thoughts,
it must shine brightly on
with reassuring radiance that suppresses fear with faith.

The key to love is sharing…
facing your good fortunes as well as the bad, together;
both conquering problems ~
forever searching for ways to intensify your happiness.

The key to love is giving…
without thought of return,
but with the hope of just a simple smile
and by giving-in, but never up.

The key to love is respect…
realizing that you are two separate people with different ideas;
that you don’t belong to each other,
but that you belong with each other and share a mutual bond.

The key to love is inside us all…
it takes time and patience to unlock all the ingredients that will take you to it threshold;
it is a continual learning process that demands a lot of work…
but the rewards are more than worth the effort…

And you are the key to me.

Love is a song that never ends
Life may be swift and fleeting
Hope may die yet love’s beautiful music
Comes each day like the dawn
Love is a song that never ends
One simple theme repeating
Like the voice of a heavenly choir
Love’s sweet music flows on.

If I never knew you
If I never felt this love
I would have no inkling of
How precious life can be
And if I never held you
I would never have a clue
How at last I’d find in you
The missing part of me
If I never knew you
I’d be safe but half as real
Never knowing I could feel
A love so strong and true
I’m so grateful to you
I’d have lived my whole life through
Lost forever
If I never knew you.

We’re not saying you can change them,
‘cuz people don’t really change
We’re only saying that love’s a force
that’s powerful and strange

People make bad choices
if they’re mad, or scared, or stressed
Throw a little love their way
and you’ll bring out their best.

Everyone’s a bit of a fixer-upper,
that’s what it’s all about!
Father! Sister! Brother!
We need each other to raise us up
and round us out

Everyone’s a bit of a fixer-upper,
but when push comes to shove…
The only fixer-upper fixer
that can fix up a fixer-upper is true love.

Nightmare Before Christmas

My dearest friend,
if you don’t mind
I’d like to join you
by your side

Where we can gaze
into the stars
And sit together,
now and forever

For it is plain
as anyone can see
We are simply
meant to be.

Princess and the Frog

For the way you changed my plans
For being the perfect distraction
For the way you took the idea that I have
Of everything that I wanted to have
And made me see there was something missing
For the ending of my first beginning
And for the rare and unexpected friend
For the way you’re something that I’d never choose
But at the same time, something I don’t wanna lose
And never wanna be without ever again
You’re the best thing I never knew I needed
So when you were here I had no idea
You are the best thing I never knew I needed
So now it’s so clear, I need you here always.

Mickey without Minny

What’s Mickey without Minnie?
What’s Tigger without Pooh?
What’s Donald without Daisy?
What’s me without you?

And when Elmo isn’t ticklish,
And Pooh bear hates honey.
When Tigger stops bouncing,
And Goofy isn’t funny.

When Peter Pan can’t fly,
And Simba never roars,
When Alice in Wonderland
Can’t fit through small doors.

When Dumbo’s ears are small,
And happily ever after isn’t true,
That’s when I’ll
stop loving you.

Something Nerdy

Star Wars

Definition: ‘Love’ is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometres away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope.

Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, ‘love’ is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and strangely enough, not many meatbags would derive love from it.

Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose, against statistically long odds.

Star Trek

“Commander, I don’t think you can analyze love. It’s the greatest mystery of all. No one knows why it happens, or doesn’t. Love is a chance combination of elements. Any one thing might be enough to keep it from igniting – a mood, a glance… a remark. And if we could define love, predict it – it would probably lose its power.”

Neelix (Unforgettable, 1998)

Doctor Who

You know when sometimes, you meet someone so beautiful – and then you actually talk to them, and five minutes later they’re as dull as a brick; but then there’s other people. And you meet them and you think, ‘Not bad, they’re okay,’ and then when you get to know them… Their face just sort of becomes them, like their personality’s written all over it, and they just – they turn into something so beautiful. Rory’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever met.

Amy Pond (The Girl Who Waited)

Doctor Who

“Do you wanna come with me? ‘Cause if you do, then I should warn you – you’re gonna see all sorts of things. Ghosts from the past. Aliens from the future. The day the Earth died in a ball of flame. It won’t be quiet, it won’t be safe, and it won’t be calm. But I’ll tell you what it will be: The trip of a lifetime!”

The Ninth Doctor

Chronicles of Narnia

And as He spoke, He no longer looked to them like a lion; but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them. And for us this the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.

Game of Thrones

“As you are the Moon of his life, he shall be your Sun and Stars. Your love shall be as ever present as those two celestial bodies…even though they are sometimes hidden from one another’s sight. Your love will be the guiding force that charts the course of your tomorrows, holds your world together in difficult times, and will make life itself shine bolder and brighter than we human beings have a right to dream of.”

From Khal Drogo and Khaleesi’s Dothraki wedding

Game of Thrones

“Father. Smith. Warrior. Mother. Maiden. Crone. Stranger. I am hers, and he is mine, from this day, until the end of my days.”

Robb Stark marries Talisa

The X-Files

“Well, it seems to me that the best relationships – the ones that last – are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is… suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.”

Dana Scully

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

“When I say, ‘I love you,’ it’s not because I want you or because I can’t have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try. I’ve seen your kindness and your strength. I’ve seen the best and the worst of you. And I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You’re a hell of a woman. You’re the one.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

It is born, and though uninvited, unwelcome,
unwanted…like a cancer it takes root.
It festers. It bleeds. It scabs…
only to rupture and bleed anew.
It grows…it thrives…until it consumes.
It lives, so it must die. It lies in all of us.
Sleeping, waiting, and though unwanted, unbidden,
it will stir–open its jaws and howl.
It speaks to us, guides us. Some to despair…
it drives others to murder and others to madness.
Passion rules us all, and we obey.
What other choice do we have?
Passion is the source of our finest moments:
the joy of love, the clarity of hatred,
and the ecstasy of grief.
It hurts sometimes more than we can bare.
Passion is the source of hope and the cause of despair.
It is the source of life and the cause of death.
If we could live without passion,
maybe we’d know some kind of peace.
But we would be hollow.
Empty rooms, shuttered and dank.
Without passion, we’d be truly dead.”

The Princess Bride

“Do I love you? My God, if your love were a grain of sand, mine would be a universe of beaches… I have stayed these years in my hovel because of you. I have taught myself languages because of you. I have made my body strong because I thought you might be pleased by a strong body. I have lived my life with only the prayer that some sudden dawn you might glance in my direction. I have not known a moment in years when the sight of you did not send my heart careening against my rib cage. I have not known a night when your visage did not accompany me to sleep. There has not been a morning when you did not flutter behind my waking eyelids…

I love you. Okay? Want it louder? I love you. Spell it out, should I? I ell-oh-vee-ee why-oh-you. Want it backward? You love I.”

Harry Potter

A chilly breeze that seemed to emanate from the heart of the Forest lifted the hair at Harry’s brow. He knew that they would not tell him to go, that it would have to be his decision.
‘You’ll stay with me?’

‘Until the very end,’ said James.

‘They won’t be able to see you?’ asked Harry.

‘We are part of you,’ said Sirius. ‘Invisible to anyone else.’ Harry looked at his mother.

‘Stay close to me,’ he said quietly.

Leo’s vows
Piper, throughout the tears and struggles I always knew it in my heart that we’re gonna make it here. I promise to love and respect you from this point forward as your husband. As my wife. My lover. My friend. And my soulmate. All I am is yours.

Piper’s vows
Leo, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I was afraid that you were too good to be true. That maybe I didn’t deserve someone so pure and beautiful and loving as you are. But here we are, surrounded by the people that I love the most. And I feel so proud and so blessed to be your wife. Leo, I was born to love you. And I always will.

Handfasting Spell
“Heart to thee,
Body to thee,
Always and forever,
So mote it be.”

“Ye are Blood of my Blood, and Bone of my Bone,
I give ye my Body, that we Two might be One.
I give ye my Spirit, ’til our Life shall be Done.”

“But just then, for that fraction of time, it seems as though all things are possible. You can look across the limitations of your own life, and see that they are really nothing. In that moment when time stops, it is as though you know you could undertake any venture, complete it and come back to yourself, to find the world unchanged, and everything just as you left it a moment before. And it’s as though knowing that everything is possible, suddenly nothing is necessary.”

“The gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.”

The Matrix

“I wish I hadn’t. That was my last thought. I wished I had one more chance to say what really mattered; to say how much I loved you, how grateful I was for every moment I was with you. But by the time I said what I wanted to, it was too late. But you brought me back. You gave me my wish. One more chance to say what I really wanted to say… Kiss me, once more. Kiss me.”

All I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

All of what I really need to know about how to live, and what to do, and how to be, I learned in Kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.

These are the things I learned…
Share everything.
Play fair.
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Give them to someone who feels sad.
Live a balanced life.
Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day.
Take a nap every afternoon.
Be aware of wonder.

Remember the little seed in the plastic cup? The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

Everything you need to know is in there somewhere.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

Robert Fulgham

Yes, I’ll marry you

Yes, I’ll marry you, my dear,
And here’s the reason why;
So I can push you out of bed
When the baby starts to cry,
And if we hear a knocking
And it’s creepy and it’s late,
I hand you the torch you see,
And you investigate.

Yes I’ll marry you, my dear,
You may not apprehend it,
But when the tumble-drier goes
It’s you that has to mend it,
You have to face the neighbour
Should our labrador attack him,
And if a drunkard fondles me
It’s you that has to whack him.

Yes, I’ll marry you,
You’re virile and you’re lean,
My house is like a pigsty
You can help to keep it clean.
That sexy little dinner
Which you served by candlelight,
As I do chipolatas,
You can cook it every night!

It’s you who has to work the drill
and put up curtain track,
And when I’ve got PMT it’s you who gets the flak,
I do see great advantages,
But none of them for you,
And so before you see the light,
I do, I do, I do!

Pam Ayres

I’ll rely on you

I rely on you
like a camera needs a shutter
like a gambler needs a flutter
like a golfer needs a putter
like a buttered scone involves some butter

I rely on you
like an acrobat needs ice cool nerve
like a hairpin needs a drastic curve
like an HGV needs endless derv
like an outside left needs a body swerve

I rely on you
like a handyman needs pliers
like an auctioneer needs buyers
like a laundromat needs driers
like The Good Life needed Richard Briers

I rely on you.

A Lovely Love Story

The fierce Dinosaur was trapped inside his cage of ice. Although it was cold he was happy in there. It was, after all, his cage.
Then along came the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
The Lovely Other Dinosaur melted the Dinosaur’s cage with kind words and loving thoughts.

I like this Dinosaur thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
Although he is fierce he is also tender and he is funny.
He is also quite clever though I will not tell him this for now.

I like this Lovely Other Dinosaur, thought the Dinosaur. She is beautiful and she is different and she smells so nice.
She is also a free spirit which is a quality I much admire in a dinosaur.

But he can be so distant and so peculiar at times, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.
He is also overly fond of things.
Are all Dinosaurs so overly fond of things?

But her mind skips from here to there so quickly, thought the Dinosaur. She is also uncommonly keen on shopping.
Are all Lovely Other Dinosaurs so uncommonly keen on shopping?

I will forgive his peculiarity and his concern for things, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur. For they are part of what makes him a richly charactered individual.

I will forgive her skipping mind and her fondness for shopping, thought the Dinosaur. For she fills our life with beautiful thoughts and wonderful surprises. Besides, I am not unkeen on shopping either.

Now the Dinosaur and the Lovely Other Dinosaur are old.
Look at them.
Together they stand on the hill telling each other stories and feeling the warmth of the sun on their backs.

And that, my friends, is how it is with love.
Let us all be Dinosaurs and Lovely Other Dinosaurs together.
For the sun is warm.
And the world is a beautiful place.

Edward Monkton

He Never Leaves The Seat Up

He never leaves the seat up
Or wet towels upon the floor
The toothpaste has the lid on
And he always shuts the door!

She’s very clean and tidy
Though she may sometimes delude
Leave your things out at your peril
In a second they’ll have moved!

He’s a very active person
As are all his next of kin
Whereas she likes lazy days
He’ll still drag her to the gym!

He romances her and dines her
Home cooked dinners and the like
He even knows her favourite food
And spoils her day and night!

She’s thoughtful when he looks at her
A smile upon his face
Will he look that good in 50 years
When his dentures aren’t in place?!

He says he loves her figure
And her mental prowess too
But when gravity takes her over
Will she charm with her IQ?

She says she loves his kindness
And his patience is a must
And of course she thinks he’s handsome
Which in her eyes is a plus!

They’re both not wholly perfect
But who are we to judge
He can be pig headed
Whereas she won’t even budge!

All that said and done
They love the time they spent together
And I hope as I’m sure you do
That this fine day will last forever.

He’ll be more than just her husband
He’ll also be her friend
And she’ll be more than just his wife
She’s be his soul mate – till the end.

Be my Homer

Be my Homer
I wanna be your Marge.
If I’m your Norfolk Broads
Will you be my barge?
Let’s please be Tom and Barbara,
I will show you The Good Life.
Even though we’re not yet married
I would love to be your wife.
I’ve the passion Lily Munster
has for her dear Herman.
I would love you if you were ginger,
I would love you if you were German.
Like Mr and Mrs Huxtable,
We’d smooch even when we’re wrinkly.
I’ll even consider ironing your shirts,
But I hope you like them crinkly.
Like Mr and Mrs Incredible
I’m flexible and you’re tough.
But if you promise to be my true love
That will always be enough.
Like Bonny and that Clyde guy
without all the dying.
Like Gwyneth and that Coldplay man
without all the crying.
My partner in crime, the love of my life.

Grow old with you

I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad
Carry you around when your arthritis is bad
All I wanna do is grow old with you

I’ll get your medicine when your tummy aches
Build you a fire if the furnace breaks
Oh, it could be so nice, growing old with you

I’ll miss you
Kiss you
Give you my coat when you are cold

Need you
Feed you
Even let you hold the remote control

So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink
Put you to bed when you’ve had too much to drink
Oh, I could be the man who grows old with you
I wanna grow old with you

The Wedding Singer

I’ll be there for you

I’ll be there my darling, through thick and through thin
When your mind’s in a mess and your head’s in a spin
When your plane’s been delayed, and you’ve missed the last train.
When life is just threatening to drive you insane
When your thrilling whodunit has lost its last page
When somebody tells you, you’re looking your age
When your coffee’s too cool, and your wine is too warm
When the forecast said “Fine”, but you’re out in a storm
When your quick break hotel, turns into a slum
And your holiday photos show only your thumb

When you park for five minutes in a resident’s bay
And return to discover you’ve been towed away
When the jeans that you bought in hope or in haste
Just stick on your hips and don’t reach round your waist
When the food you most like brings you out in red rashes
When as soon as you boot up the bloody thing crashes

So my darling, my sweetheart, my dear…
When you break a rule, when you act the fool
When you’ve got the flu, when you’re in a stew
When you’re last in the queue, don’t feel blue
’cause I’m telling you, I’ll be there.

Marriage is about giving and taking
And forging and forsaking
Kissing and loving and pushing and shoving
Caring and sharing and screaming and swearing

About being together whatever the weather
About being driven to the end of your tether
About sweetness and kindness
And wisdom and blindness

It’s about being strong when you’re feeling quite weak
It’s about saying nothing when you’re dying to speak
It’s about being wrong when you know you are right
It’s about giving in, before there’s a fight
It’s about you two living as cheaply as one
(you can give us a call if you know how that’s done!)

Never heeding advice that was always well meant
Never counting the cost until it’s all spent
And for you two today it’s about to begin
And for all that the two of you had to put in
Some days filled with joy, and some days with sadness
Too late you’ll discover that marriage is madness.
