General introduction and welcome of your guests

Legally, I need to say this part: I am duly authorised by law to solemnise marriages according to law. Before you are joined in marriage in my presence and in the presence of these witnesses, I am to remind you of the solemn and binding nature of the relationship into which you are now about to enter. Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life

This is a nice chance to thank parents and/or grandparents for their support of your relationship. I can do this on your behalf.

Readings are entirely optional but are a good way to involve special guests at your wedding. These definitely don't need to be religious and you can be quite creative Check out some options here

This is popular in blended families, often with a sentimental gift of commitment to the child

This is the point at which I'll ask "Do you take" and the two of you will reply "I do" (hopefully)

Some couples hate this stuff, others love it. From Sand Ceremonies to Water Blending to Oathing Stones and Shells, there are symbolic traditions from around the world that can make your wedding ceremony even more engaging

These can be written by the couple or I can do it for you, but each legally must contain the following words at a minimum:

“I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, A.B. (or C.D.), take thee, C.D. (or A.B.), to be my lawful wedded wife (or husband)”

While the exchange of rings is traditional, it isn't compulsory! Alternative symbols of unity can be watches, garlands, hand-fasting, drink sharing, etc

This is the formal announcement of the union and the partnership introduction

This legally binding part of the ceremony takes about 5-10 minutes and requires two witnesses over 18 years
